Running Against the Odds: 47-Year-Old Mother Wins Marathon Barefoot in a Saree

A simple saree, ordinary slippers on her feet, and a heart full of worry for her daughters’ future.

Without any modern training facilities or sports gear, a 47-year-old mother has stunned everyone by finishing first in a marathon — leaving young athletes far behind. Rambai Ranveer from Ambajogai has become the talk of Maharashtra with her extraordinary story of grit, struggle and determination.

The occasion was the “Amrut Doud” marathon, organised to mark the diamond jubilee (75th anniversary) of Ambajogai’s Kholeshwar Educational Complex. The race was held from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk to Bhagynagar Chowk, and hundreds of young men and women took part. Amidst a crowd of runners dressed in tracksuits and proper sports shoes, no one paid much attention to Rambai, who was standing there in a simple saree.

But the moment the whistle blew, Rambai took off with such surprising speed that everyone turned to look. After covering a short distance, her slippers started troubling her. Without wasting a second, she pulled them off, held them in her hands, and continued running barefoot.

Managing the folds of her saree and carefully avoiding sharp stones on the road, she steadily overtook one runner after another. Spectators watched in amazement as she crossed the finish line in first place.

Tears of joy filled the eyes of everyone who witnessed this golden moment. This determined mother, who has been fighting hardships and running barefoot for the sake of her daughters’ education, received a thunderous round of applause and a respectful salute from the crowd.

We too salute this boundless mother’s love and unbreakable spirit!
